Instrumental Music

The music option in grade nine gives students the opportunity to learn a wind instrument as well as keyboarding skills. You will also get a chance to do some recording in our music and computers lab. Music is open to any student, beginner or otherwise. Embrace your potential, en-roll in music at Korah and then join concert band, the Korahsters choir, musical theatre and Mustang Sally in the future. 


Grade 9 Open (AMU1O)
This course emphasizes the creation and performance of music at a level consistent with previous experience and is aimed at developing technique, sensitivity, and imagination. Students will develop musical literacy skills by using the creative and critical analysis processes in composition, performance, and a range of reflective and analytical activities. Students will develop an understanding of the conventions and elements of music and of safe practices related to music and will develop a variety of skills transferable to other areas of their life.

Music, Grade 10 Open (AMU2O)
This course emphasizes the creation and performance of music at a level consistent with previous experience. Students will develop musical literacy skills by using the creative and critical analysis processes in composition, performance, and a range of reflective and analytical activities. Students will develop their understanding of musical conventions, practices, and terminology and apply the elements of music in a range of activities. They will also explore the function of music in society with reference to the self, communities, and cultures. Prerequisite: None.

Instrumental Music – Band, Grade 11 University/College Preparation (AMI3M)
This course emphasizes individual performance as well as in ensemble playing. Musical styles such as jazz, classical and contemporary, will be explored in greater detail. Students will continue to further their knowledge of musical concepts and increase their music reading skills. Listening skills will be further developed and the compositional component will include using electronic instruments to write musical accompaniment. Prerequisite: AMI2O or permission of instructor.

Music, Grade 11 IB Standard Level (AMI3MB)
In this course students study musical perception, engaging with familiar and unfamiliar music from a range of times, places, and cultures. Students are engaged through an active approach, developing critical thinking and participating in inquiry-based learning both in individual and collaborative work. Students critically appraise music using appropriate musical terminology in the analysis of works. Elements such as duration, pitch, tonality, timbre/tone, colour, texture, dynamics, form and structure are studied. Performance based assessment is required, and students select either solo or group option. Prerequisite: 10 Enhanced Music or 10 Academic Music.
