Why business studies? Because we all eventually work with other people in organizations or businesses!
For-profit or not-for-profit, private sector or public sector, it doesn’t matter, people work and collaborate with others to get things done and that requires business knowledge, skills and abilities.
The business studies and computers department offer courses to all grade levels: intro to computers, business marketing, accounting, entrepreneurship. computer engineering and business and social media. In grade nine, you will learn about computer hardware and software, workplace ergonomics, ethics in IT and the use of Office 365.
Information and Communication Technology in Business,
This course introduces students to information and communication technology in a business environment and builds a foundation of digital literacy skills necessary for success in a technologically driven society. Students will develop word processing, spreadsheet, database, desktop publishing, presentation software, and website design skills. Throughout the course, there is an emphasis on digital literacy, effective electronic research and communication skills, and current issues related to the impact of information and communication technology.
Introduction to Business, Grade 9 or 10 Open (BBI1O, BBI2O)
This course introduces students to the world of business. Students will develop an understanding of the functions of business, including accounting, marketing, information technology, human resources, and production, and of the importance of ethics and social responsibility. This course builds a foundation for further studies in business and helps students develop the business knowledge and skills they will need in their everyday lives.
Financial Accounting Fundamentals, Grade 11 University/College Preparation (BAF3M)
This course introduces students to the fundamental principles and procedures of accounting. Students will develop financial analysis and decision-making skills that will assist them in future studies and/or career opportunities in business. Students will acquire an understanding of accounting for a service and a merchandising business, computerized accounting, financial analysis, and current issues and ethics in accounting.

Aboriginal Youth Entrepreneurship Program: Grade 11 College Preparation (BDI3CA)
This course focuses on ways in which entrepreneurs recognize opportunities, generate ideas, and organize resources to plan successful ventures that enable them to achieve their goals. Students will create a venture plan for a school-based or student-run business. Through hands on experience, students will have opportunities to develop the values, traits, and sills most often associated with successful entrepreneurs.

Information and Communication Technology: The Digital Environment, Grade 11 Open (BTA3O)
This course prepares students for the digital environment. Using a hands-on approach, students will further develop information and communication technology skills through the use of common business software applications. The concept and operation of e-business will be explored, and students will design and create an e-business website. The skills developed in this course will prepare students for success in the workplace and/or postsecondary studies.

Marketing: Goods, Services, Events, Grade 11 College Preparation (BMI3C)
This course introduces the fundamental concepts of product marketing, which includes the marketing of goods, services, and events. Students will examine how trends, issues, global economic changes, and information technology influence consumer buying habits. Students will engage in marketing research, develop marketing strategies, and produce a marketing plan for a product of their choice. Prerequisite: None. At White Pines, the primary focus will be sports and Entertainment Marketing, in the areas of amateur and professional sports, as well as the music, theatre, travel and tourism industries.

Financial Accounting Principles, Grade 12 University/College Preparation (BAT4M)
This course introduces students to advanced accounting principles that will prepare them for postsecondary studies in business. Students will learn about financial statements for various forms of business ownership and how those statements are interpreted in making business decisions. This course further develops accounting methods for assets and introduces accounting for partnerships, corporations, and sources of financing.

Information and Communication Technology: Multimedia Solutions, Grade 12 College Preparation (BTX4C) This course provides students with the opportunity to apply their information and communication technology skills while working in a team environment. Through a project-based approach, students will have opportunities to integrate common business software applications and apply multimedia techniques. Students will further develop their understanding of electronic business and e-commerce environments. The skills acquired in this course will prepare students for success in postsecondary studies and in their future careers.

Business Leadership: Management Fundamentals, Grade 12 University/College Preparation (BOH4M)
This course focuses on the development of leadership skills used in managing a successful business. Students will analyze the role of a leader in business with a focus on decision making, management of group dynamics, workplace stress and conflict, motivation of employees, and planning. Effective business communication skills, ethics, and social responsibility will be emphasized throughout the course.
Prerequisite: Any university, university/college, or college preparation course in business studies, English, or Canadian and world studies.
International Business Fundamentals, Grade 12 University/College Preparation (BBB4M)
This course provides an overview of the importance of international business and trade in the global economy and explores the factors that influence success in international markets. Students will learn about the techniques and strategies associated with marketing, distribution, and managing international business effectively. This course prepares students for postsecondary programs in business, including international business, marketing, and management.

Digital Social Media Management: Grade 12 University Preparation (BTX4C)
This course will help students create informative media, and electronic products for school and community audiences in diverse formats (e.g., twitter, Instagram, YouTube, blogging, web pages). Students will investigate sources of information and compare differing perspectives on key issues, developing both a sense of news and news judgment. They will also learn editorial conventions and practices, principles of a variety of social media formats and web design, and management skills, and will explore legal and ethical uses of information that is made public. Students will interpret and evaluate informational, graphic and literary media and create oral, written and visual media in a variety of forms.
